AT&T has announced the launch of a new branded barcode scanning application and companion barcode creation service in the AT&T Code Scanner, Create a Code service for consumers and Code Management Platform for businesses.
The app will scan 2D (QR and datamatrix) and 1D (UPC and EAN) barcodes for more information on product stamped with the aforementioned barcodes. According to the carrier, the application will work with barcodes from magazines, retail items and online codes in the future while the service will be limited to marketing and promotional materials for the time being. The app is a free download from the Android Market and BlackBerry App World.
AT&T has also announced two new services in AT&T Create-a-Code, which allows users to make their own mobile barcode, which can be used to direct scanners to multiple services and businesses access to its Code Management Platform, which will allow building and management of campaigns behind mobile barcodes.
