Skype has iaunched a beta version of their combination VoIP and chat software for standard mobile phones. The client features many of the same features as the desktop client including both individual and group chat awareness, status updates, contact lists, and conferencing.
The software dials out using the standard voice radio, and then switches over to the available data connection (3G/Wi-Fi) for the duration of the voice call or chat session making great use of newly launched unlimited mobile data services in Europe such as the software developer’s partnership with European 3G carrier 3 and the Skypephone.
Over 50 handsets from Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson are currently compatible with the application.
The beta is currently restricted to users in Brazil, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom with no details on expansion to other territories. Skype will also be monitoring user feedback during the beta to improve and complete the application. There are currently no details on the launch of the final version, and the beta test is expected to last several months.
