And, We’re Back (Updated Again)
No, a 48 hour outage is simply unacceptable. But, we did finally get things working with our new hosting company, InMotion Hosting. The problems were resolved, as we thought, by taking suPHP out of the equation… by putting PhoneNews.com on a server that doesn’t use it.
I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again… suPHP and phpsuexec are terrible pieces of software. They take PHP code and try to run it in a protected environment… which is a bit like saying ActiveX is a protected environment. It is, but it trades a modicum of security for a plague of bugs and slowdowns.
But, for those of you that have no idea how to run a server… it’s done and that’s all you need to know. Barring any unusual tinkering, we’ll be with this server for the foreseeable future. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to now flood the site with 48 hours of wireless news that is missing.
Update: Unfortunately, the server move on InMotion’s end has created two new issues. And, once again, there’s nothing we can do about them. I cannot being to explain how frustrating it is to have everything but one or two things not work… and have that derail any progress at all on the site. We’ve re-opened the forums, but unfortunately, we’re still playing tag with support emails. And yes, this means more lost money, and more full page ads you’ll have to look at.
Update 2: Finally, things seem to be back to normal. We apologize for the complete outage of RSS, Forums, and new content for three days. We’re currently updating the news feed with all the news that you’ve missed (and yes, that means some news will be a bit stale for phone addicts, please scroll along with us while we bring everyone up-to-date).
