Going on Strike: Microsoft DST Fix Ruined my Outlook
If, on March 11, I announce I won’t be available until CTIA at the end of the month, here’s why. Essentially, I ran TZMOVE, the tool Microsoft says you may need to run, but isn’t publicizing hardly at all. That was supposed to correct all our calendar data to conform to the Congressional debacle known as “We wanted to tinker with daylight saving time”.
I assure you, any environmental benefit, even amortized over years, has been wasted by the fact people are going to throw out old devices that don’t respond properly.
Anyways, the dates are now hours off in my Outlook data file. I have to set my PDA to Mountain standard time just to read current (pre-11th) times properly. And yes, I followed TZMOVE instructions to the letter. Yes, my PDAs have the proper DST updates. Yes, I’ve lost hours on this already.
I promise you though, if this can’t be fixed with a quick DST patch (which MS says they’re still working on), I’m going on strike. Most of the time will be recreating my Outlook calendar files for three years into the future… but this time, it will be in iCal on a Mac. Apple didn’t screw up these DST changes, only Microsoft.
So, thank Microsoft for my time away, I’ll be sure to remind you about it come the 11th. You’ll be in the capable hands of the rest of the staff in the interim.
