Page Breaks, and Well, Breaks…

Some raised some questions over what type of spacing to use on the Phone Encyclopedia, and I wanted to share my reply about it to one contributor:

We use pagebreak tags (br tags) sparingly on the Phone Encyclopedia. This is to encourage the use of Wiki-style editing and formatting. We do use pagebreak tags on our links pages, and firmware tracker to ease spacing constraints.

The only area on phone pages that users generally will be contributing to, which requires pagebreaks, is the Codes section. Updates, downloads, links, and tips, all should not use pagebreaks.

Adding confusion is that many of the pages aren’t doing this right now. We will be having people go through and fix them, when time permits.

Speaking of breaks, we plan to move forward deploying WordPress next week. The new look, unfortunately, has been delayed due to quality issues (simply put, we’re not happy with it yet). So, we will be running with a very generic look like you see right now. We expect this to run for about a week, hopefully no longer after we have made the switch.

We also have added significant tools to ease the backlink woes. We’ll have instant monitoring and copies of PhoneNews.com available, so when people start running into 404’s, we’ll fix them as they appear. Our goal is eventually for zero 404’s, but that may be awhile. Our 404 page will help people get to the news they need in the mean time.

When will PhoneNews.com go offline? Either the 1st or the 3rd, with returning online on the 5th. When exactly will be determined by some testing which will be done after Christmas.

Update: Last minute tests went fine, so we’ll be taking the news portion offline on the 3rd. We hope to have it back up online by the 5th at the latest.
