Release Date Saga(s)

At PhoneNews.com we have a general policy to not state launch dates. We only usually report targeted quarters for release (such as, the red Samsung M610 will be released in the second quarter of this year).

This is not a rant about people failing to understand what “best intelligence available” means. It is to remind you that the reason why people like our reporting, is that we don’t cite dates usually. We report quarters of release so that folks have a good idea as to when to expect a phone, but if there is a delay (as is so common in this industry), people won’t shoot the messenger (us… we don’t like getting shot).

However, we do have a few exceptions for that. One is when a phone is seriously delayed. Another is when a phone’s release is imminent. The former happened with the PPC-6800.

When it was delayed to October, we felt the need to report on it. If you read our reporting, and see the dates, we very clearly stated every time that these were Sprint’s internal projections. We have no control over Sprint, we certainly have no control over when they launch devices. We can only report the information as it is relayed to us. I even commented several times that “Sprint could release the PPC-6800 tomorrow… we can’t control that… and if they do, we’ll report on it”.

That is what we did when the PPC-6800 got bumped back up to June for release. Sprint changed their mind, and we reported on it.

As I’ve commented so many times in the past, if folks do not want real-time reporting, please, go to our competitors. They’re very good at not giving people info in real-time. We’re going to keep doing what we’ve been doing for years and years. Why? Because we think you should have the most up-to-date, the best, and the most accurate view of the wireless industry just as soon as we can report on it.
