Searching for Searching Solutions
As you’ve heard many, many times, we’re moving to a consistent look-and-feel for all of PhoneNews.com. That means the news, forums, encyclopedia, and blog all have the same look and feel, but are running on different software platforms.
That’s a good thing.™ But it has some problems. Namely, in terms of searching. When you go up to the search bar up at the top of the site, you’re only searching the part of the site that you’re on. For example, running a news search, only returns news entries. This, is confusing for many users, and to be honest, it should be confusing.
We’ve noted that we were testing early forms of Google AJAX Search a long time ago. And, we weren’t happy with it. But, Google AJAX Search is now Google Custom Search. As the name change implies, they’ve done a lot of work on it. We’re much happier with the results of this new version.
Here’s the thing, implementing it properly isn’t easy. We basically have to write a look-and-feel to make Google Custom Search look just like the rest of the site too.
Bottom line, we plan to fix this, but it won’t be fixed until June, possibly July. The final result will be that you’ll type in a search query in the search bar, and it will search every part of PhoneNews.com… every single corner.
