Cricket Announces LG Helix Clamshell

Cricket has announced the forthcoming launch of the LG Helix entry-level clamshell, the first LG handset with CDMA AWS band support.

The Helix features AWS CDMA support, a 2.0 inch internal color display and an external display, 1.3 megapixel camera, Voice Clarity, which improves speech intelligibility and automatically adjusts hearing level when receiving or sending calls in noisy environments, Bluetooth, speakerphone and speaker-independent voice control.

It will be available starting tomorrow at Cricket retail stores, authorized dealers and online for $139.99.

Leap Announces Cricket PAYGo Sales Agreement via Target Locations

Leap Wireless, parent company of the Cricket flat-rate service has announced forthcoming availability of its Cricket PayGo prepaid service in 650 Target locations within Cricket service areas starting on Sunday, October 4.

Cricket PAYGo service consists of plans that cost $1, $2 or $3 per day depending on which features are used and include taxes and fees along with voicemail, call waiting, caller ID and three-way calling over Cricket’s network. Cricket PAYGo prepaid cards will also be available at select Target locations with the Cricket TXTM8 and CAPTR being made available for $89.99 and $49.99 respectively.

Cricket to Launch New Plans and Major Retail Presence This Winter

Cricket has announced that it has revamped its plans ahead of its retail sales expansion via four new national retailers with the new plans to be offered exclusively via the yet unannounced retailers covering 3,500 new sales locations.

The new all-inclusive $40 and $45 plans will be available only through these mass merchants with the new $40 plan including unlimited talk, US long distance, access to Cricket’s premium extended calling area, domestic, international text and picture messaging.

The new $45 plan has all the unlimited features of the $40 plan plus unlimited mobile Web and directory assistance. The new plans also include all fees and telecom taxes as well as voicemail, call waiting, caller ID and three-way calling over Cricket’s 3G EVDO network. Airtime, or top-up, cards for Cricket PAYGo will be available in these four national retailers and thousands of other locations across the country.

Cricket Broadband will also be available in nearly 1,000 national retailer stores through a new all-inclusive $50 monthly service plan which will include all fees and taxes while providing unlimited Internet access without a signed contract or credit check. The Cricket A600 modem will be available as a grab-and-go offering for $69.99 with no activation fees with $50.00 top-up cards being made available for the modem.

Cricket Launches Samsung Messager II

Following up on the MetroPCS launch, Cricket Wireless has launched its version of the Samsung Messager II messaging/multimedia phone.

Like the MetroPCS version, the Messager II features a redesigned bodyshell, Bluetooth with stereo audio support, triband CDMA support for roaming, 2.0 megapixel camera with video recorder along with speakerphone, media player, sliding QWERTY keyboard, QVGA display, microSDHC expansion slot, and EVDO data access.

The phone is now available online for $179.99 and is available in retail stores for $199.99.

Leap Launches PCD TXTM8 in Cricket Retail Stores

Following up on the online launch of the PCD TXTM8 last week, corporate parent Leap Wireless has announced the retail launch of the messaging phone.

The TXTM8 feature set is identical to the Blitz with a 2.2 inch display, QWERTY keyboard, 1.3 megapixel camera, microSDHC expansion slot, Bluetooth with stereo audio support, and speakerphone with Cricket’s MyHomeScreen which provides access to news, sports, entertainment and weather.

The phone is available for $159.99 before applicable sales taxes.

Cricket Launches PCD TXTM8

Cricket has launched its variant of the PCD TXT8010 slider messaging phone in the TXTM8. The TXT8010 was originally launched as the Verizon Blitz earlier this year.

The TXTM8 feature set is identical to the Blitz with a 2.2 inch display, QWERTY keyboard, 1.3 megapixel camera, microSDHC expansion slot, Bluetooth with stereo audio support, and speakerphone.

The phone is now available for $159.99 before a $20 instant online rebate, bringing the total to $139.99.

Leap Wireless Expands Coverage to Washington D.C. and Maryland

Leap Wireless has announced that it has expanded its Cricket flat-rate wireless service to Washington D.C., the Baltimore, Maryland metro area and connected suburbs/travel routes expanding its regional coverage footprint by 7.2 million customers and 91 million total customers across 4,810 square miles.

Cricket will also open 13 retail store locations in Washington, D.C. and 8 retail store locations in Baltimore in addition to the 140 Cricket exclusive wireless dealers and 170 other dealer locations throughout the region.

Boost to Expand Retail Footprint, CEO Cautious About Competition

According to comments made by Boost CEO Matt Carter while speaking to Reuters, the division plans to open 50 dedicated Boost Mobile retail locations across 10 cities which include New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Atlanta with its retail partners by the end of the year on top of the three existing locations in Los Angeles, Miami and Houston.

The reasoning given behind the expansion is one of increased visibility along with the growing acceptance of prepaid service as a viable option in the eyes of the general public, aided in part by the explosive success of the $50 Unlimited plan the operator launched in January.

Carter also relayed some trepidation that the Boost offering would trigger a price war as Virgin Mobile, MetroPCS, and Cricket compete with Boost on price, with T-Mobile ramping up a similar offering in select markets that would utimately lead to the aforementioned situation should it be rolled out at a nationwide level.
