It should also be pointed out that the only reason IMS is deployed is due to video calling over Rev. A. Since Sprint wants to shore up capacity on Rev. A and is placing a higher priority on QChat, we’ll actually see two-way video calling over WiMax before we see it (IF we ever do) deployed over Rev. A.

Since Verizon is busy with their own network logistics on transitioning to LTE, I doubt we’ll see them deploy IMS unless they want to deploy video calling over Rev. A at some point, and I haven’t seen anything on their end that would lead to that conclusion.

And no, Sprint has not deployed that sublayer to date. Sprint doesn’t see it as a priority since the network team is busy refining QChat and getting that off the ground. QChat is more important, and also much more difficult to implement.

… Oh, and they’re busy with WiMAX too.

I’m not trying to defend or argue that Sprint shouldn’t deploy this. But, Verizon hasn’t either, and Sprint has to prioritize what network technologies get implemented.

It all hinges on whether Sprint has deployed the Internet Multimedia sublayer on the backend in order for phone calls to be carried over Rev. A as a VOIP call. No one has come forward yet with firsthand results, but if it’s anything close to what I experienced on AU in Japan, then yes it is possible.
