HTC has announced that it will transition the Nexus One and Desire from its initial AMOLED display specification to the S-LCD display type due to the current supply constraints of AMOLED displays after weeks of speculation in order to allow it to increase production for its most popular models. While the manufacturer specifically named the Desire and Nexus One, other models formerly specified with AMOLED displays are also expected to be transitioned to the Sony-developed display during the year.
HTC CEO Peter Chou has released this statement with the announcement:
“HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand.” “The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC’s current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance.”
As the sole manufacturer of AMOLED displays, Samsung’s focus on its own device lineup has constrained display supplies for other manufacturers.
