During a Reddit Ask Me Anything session held earlier today, HTC took questions from fans of the brand as the company struggles to correct its struggling business. One of the ways it plans to do this is by promising 2 full years of updates for all of its devices going forward as a show of appreciation to its customers.
It plans to start by confirming that the now 2 year old HTC 8X Windows Phone 8 device will be updated to 8.1/Windows Phone Blue in the future after months of no real activity involving Windows Phone or its current lineup as well as making a new commitment with its Android lineup. HTC also made sure to note that it was working on a way to update the US HTC One X+ to Jelly Bean, despite previously stating that it would not update either version past Jelly Bean.
In addition, outside of the Reddit AMA the company’s Facebook page was updated with a teaser image hinting at a new screen repair service, with more information expected next Tuesday. Finally, the company confirmed that while the HTC EVO 4G LTE can be updated to Android Jelly Bean 4.3 on a technical level, the problem lies in its flash memory partitioning, which prevents the update from being pushed out as an over the air update on Sprint.
To remedy this for the more technically inclined owners, HTC will be beginning a new pilot program whereby interested owners can email for more information on the manual update test, with the eventual goal of offering a more streamlined process for manual updates when necessary.
