Many readers have pointed out a concerning note at the bottom of the Samsung Instinct teaser web site: “Instinct requires an Everything plan for key features to function appropriately.”
Some have concluded that this will require that Instinct be on an Everything plan in order to be activated. However, there is information that calls this into question.
The “key features” that appear to be the cause of this statement is Instinct’s Visual Voicemail system. Instinct appears to frequently make brief calls to voicemail, communicates with the system to download messages, and then hangs up and parses the voicemails into a playable message that is downloaded to the device.
This is in contrast to Apple’s iPhone implmentation. iPhone requires more significant changes to the carrier infastructure, as voicemail notifications are sent by the network using the SMS system, in addition to other IP-based infastructure changes to facilitate downloading of messages, and communicating voicemail changes.
Instinct’s system would not work on a tradition plan for visual voicemail, since it would require significant anytime minute charges to be incurred.
As such, it appears that users will have to make a choice: Instinct with Visual Voicemail on a Simply Everything plan, or, an Instinct on a standard plan, without Visual Voicemail.
