Reports circulating around the media state that Motorola’s perenially struggling mobile devices division will be subject to layoffs of up to half of its current staff. Â The layoffs could begin sometime this week and continue until the company decides it is satisfied with the reduction.
Because of the reduction, fewer handset models are expected to be developed and the number of new models launched per year may number as low as 12 after the aformentioned restructuring. Â Smart deveice development is also said to be consolidated solely to the Android platform instead of further developing Windows Mobile, Symbian, or UIQ devices.
Motorola has also pulled out of this year’s CTIA Expo, with an anonymous employee confirming that the company will not have its customary booth at the trade show this year.
Update: Motrola has clarified its stance on attending the CTIA expo this year and will have two booths during the convention. Â Motorola refused to provide further comment on the layoffs when pressed for further information.
