In a joint press conference during MWC, Verizon and Skype have announced that the carrier will support Skype services over Verizon’s cellular network with the release of a new access client beginning next month.
The newly developed Skype Mobile client for Verizon allows for direct Skype-Skype calling, SkypeOut calling and instant messaging over the voice network, but does not use plan airtime or function over Wi-Fi via VOIP in an identical manner to Skype’s venture with European carrier 3.
While the application does not use data once a call is in progress, the application and service requires a data plan on the account to tunnel the initial call from the data network onto to the voice network.
The Skype Mobile client will be released for the BlackBerry Storm 9530, Storm2 9550, Curve 8530, Curve 8330, BlackBerry 8830 World Edition, the Motorola Droid, Devour and the HTC Eris.
