  • Nokia Announces Series 40 Fifth Edition

Nokia has announced a new version of their Series 40 Java application
platform today at the JavaOne conference in San Francisco.

The new release, Series 40 5th Edition is a joint effort between
Vodafone and Nokia to implement a common set of technologies across all
handsets to ensure consistency and reduce fragmentation of featuresets
    between handsets.

The changes include the addition of a redesigned UI and MIDP 2.1 for
enhanced application capability and usability, as well as the addition
of a new Java ME extension, called JSR-248 Mobile Service Architecture
for application portability between Series 60 and Series 40 handsets
developed jointly by Vodafone and Nokia.

Other extensions included in this release are 3D sound for games and
applications using Advanced Multimedia Supplements (JSR 234), Bluetooth
with OBEX support in applications (JSR 82), basic multimedia control
(JSR 135), and Security & Trust Services with cryptography
    support through the SATSA-CRYPTO package.

An updated version of Adobe Flash Lite is also included with this
release which features better support for streaming video and audio.
There was no word of any handsets that would be released with this
    version available at this time
