NewsNokia-Siemens Networks Announces Pending EDGE Evolution Launch, EGPRS-2
In a press release today, Nokia-Siemens Networks has announced the pending launch of its Dual Carrier EDGE software upgrade solution for GSM/EDGE networks starting in the third quarter of this year.
The solution is expected to increase maximum downstream speeds to 592kbps while preparing networks for another upgrade in the form of EGPRS2, which is expected to increase speeds even further, up to 1.2Mbps downstream and 473kbps upstream with no availability date for that solution announced..
The intention behind EDGE Evolution is to offer a less expensive option for smaller carriers to offer services typically only offered on more expensive W-CDMA network deployments such as mobile tv, real-time content upload, and it also facilitates service continuity when customers travel from a 3G W-CDMA based network to an EDGE Evolution enabled network enabling the same services without interruption.
While EDGE Class 10 and Evolution are technically considered as 3G standards at top speeds, standard EDGE has not been marketed as a 3G technology by AT&T or T-Mobile.
