The PPC-6600 features a sliding QWERTY keyboard, Windows Pocket PC Phone Edition 2003, SD expansion slot with support for external peripherals, email client with POP3 and IMAP support, Bluetooth, large touchscreen display, and VGA camera with flash. This phone is also known as the HTC Harrier. All variants except for the Sprint version support EV-DO, Sprint and HTC have failed to offer an update to enable EV-DO in the device.

Note: The PPC-6601 and XV6600WOC are the non-camera versions of the device.

Carriers: Sprint, Verizon Wireless

[edit] Updates

ActiveSync 4.5

Bluetooth Keyboard & Headphones Update - Download/Transfer CAB File to PDA & Open There (Not Included In Any ROM Update), Adds Support for Keyboard HID and A2DP Audio devices

Sprint 1.36.00 PPC-6600 Firmware Updater - Update Instructions (PDF)

Sprint 1.36.00 PPC-6601 Firmware Updater - Update Instructions (PDF)

2.03.00 ROM Updater - Adds Windows Media Player 10, Not Supported by UTStarcom/Sprint, Install 1.36.00 First (To Update Radio Firmware)

Verizon 2.07.00 XV6600 Firmware Updater - Upgrade Instructions (MS Word) - Release Notes (MS Word)

Verizon 2.07.00 XV6600WOC Firmware Updater - Upgrade Instructions (MS Word)

While this may seem complicated, it's rather straightforward. Sprint users should install the 1.36 update, and then decide if they want to install the unsupported 2.03 update. Verizon users can simply download the 2.07 update. Both Sprint and Verizon customers can then install the Bluetooth update to add A2DP and wireless keyboard support.

[edit] Tips/Tricks/Hacks

Hack: Enable Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking with Other Phones
1) Download and install TRE (other registry editors will not work)
2) Turn Bluetooth off on your PPC-6600
3) Launch TRE and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Widcomm/Connection Wizard/AddIns/Connect to the Internet
4) Change dll from "btwizardprofiles.dll,1" to "btwizardprofiles.dll,3"
5) Soft Reset
6) Turn BT On, Open Connection Wizard, tap New, and chose Connect to A Network

Tip: Tether Dial-Up Networking with Mac
Note: This workaround is not needed for Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later. Simply select "Any Device" in the Bluetooth Setup Assistant on 10.4.6 or later to configure tethering.

For this to work, you need to be running at least build 3500 of the Bluetooth driver (1.36 ROM Update), as outlined above...
As you may have discovered, the Bluetooth in the PPC-6600 Series neither pairs properly nor tethers fully with Mac currently. This is both a problem with Apple's Bluetooth pairing process, as well as the drivers bundled with the PPC-6601. This is a partial workaround, let Apple know you need greater control over the pairing and BT dial-up networking process.

1) Install the latest firmware update.
2) Go to /Utilities/Bluetooth Setup Assistant and pair the device as a "Other Device"
Note: Mac OS 10.4 users will need to download the 10.3 Serial Utility for this to work properly.
3) Go to Bluetooth Serial Utility and establish a new serial port targeting the PPC-6600's Dial-Up Networking Profile
4) Set the port as a modem port, and enable it to show in Network under System Preferences
5) Open System Preferences, go to Networking
6) Setup a modem connection using the new port to #777, username and password should be left blank. The Modem Script should be "au cdmaOne C413S by Sony", disable wait for dialtone
7) Go to /Utilities/Terminal.app, and enter the following text without quotes "ping -s 1 www.sprintpcs.com" (replace sprintpcs.com with any domain), do not enter it yet
8) Connect using the newly established connection (either in Internet Connect or from the modem menubar)
9) Hit enter in the Terminal window to execute the Ping after the connection is completed

Note: Steps 7 through 9 need to be done every connection. This is due to an extremely fast timeout rate that causes the PPC-6600 Series to drop the connection within seconds of making it with the Mac. The command needs to be executed as soon as the connection is fully established.
