Tips/Tricks/Hacks
Now (08/30/2008) comes with 256mb microSD memory card from Sprint
Hack: Receive Calls while using EVDO
1 Press Menu, scroll to settings, Select Display, then press *
2 Enter your MSL Code
3 Select Toggle DDTM and change the setting to OFF
You can now use EVDO Data without missing calls however please keep in mind that if you are in a 1x area your calls will still be sent to voice mail
Trick: Playing Media without Sprint Music Store (or a data plan)
Open Music Store, as soon as the Java Logo disappears, on the "Sprint Music Store" screen, quickly hit the "cancel" button (top left button with 3 dots). Put your mp3 files into the Music folder before hand.
Tip: Using Samsung Media Player to play music and videos
- Press Menu, Press 9 (or select Tools), Press 5 (or select "Mass Storage"), Press 2 (or select "File Manager"), Press 2 (or select "Memory Card"). (Quick reference: Menu, 9, 5, 2, 2)
- Browse to your music on the memory card, press OK when file you wish to play is selected.
- (Optional) If the media player shows up with a white bar and flickering graphical glitch, simply hit back then OK again, the glitch should not occur for this session again.
Guide: Custom Ringtones for M520
Assign Custom Ringtones, Instructions, M520
It's said that "stereo" ringtones might not sound correctly, if so try converting to "mono".
3gpp2 file format, fps 14.985, codec mpeg4, width 176, height varies depending on aspect ratio of original clip, audio codec AMR-NB
Primer: Bluetooth
MacOSX has the best bluetooth support, better than Windows and Linux(Bluez)
Linux:
programs you'll probably want: gnome-obex-server bluetooth-applet
After a freaking way to long time I found out the main issue I was having with vcf file was that the "new lines" were in unix format (LF) instead of dos format (CR+LF). The fix is:
$unix2dos -b all_contacts.vcf
Then download: http://schattenschreiber.org/vcf-split/
$ wget http://schattenschreiber.org/vcf-split/vcf-split-1.0.0.tar.gz $ tar -zxvf vcf-split-1.0.0.tar.gz $ cd vcf-split-1.0.0 $ ./vcf-split all_contacts.vcf
Then (at least in gnome on ubuntu) highlight only all new vcf files and "send to", select the bluetooth phone. btw, sending a contact with only a name, no phone number, will stop the importing. I got my "all_contact.vcf" file which was exported from bitpim vcard version 2.1.
OR I suggest to try the following on a Mac:
For transferring contacts, get your hands on a mac with bluetooth, do the instructions on the following:
http://damagestudios.net/blog/2006/04/22/howto-sync-a-samsung-a920-with-mac-osx/
or try:
Bluetooth vCard Blaster 1.0.1
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25011
Otherwise, when transferring contacts over via bluetooth, M520 supports a single VCard at a time. All contacts in one VCard file isn't supported on M520, trying this will merge the first 10 phone numbers entries into one contact and ignore the rest. However, there is a simple workaround for Leopard (and perhaps Tiger) users: Automator.
Automator VCard Instructions: 1. Open Address Book. 2. Select entries you would like to send to your phone. 3. Open Automator. 4. Select Custom Workflow. 5. Add the following workflows in this order: Get Selected Address Book Items, Export VCards. 6. Change the setting in the Export VCards flow item to "Individual VCards". 7. Select a folder to export the VCard files. 8. Click Run. 9. When process is finished, use the Bluetooth File Transfer to send all the VCard files to your phone in one fell swoop.
Suggested free program for VCard, management (PIM Software). I haven't used it yet, but it looks good:
Recommended app for bluetooth transfer, cost 20 EUR: BlueSoleil
Bluetooth Phone Control Programs from another phone:
- NEOCALL
- BTINFO
GPS
MGMaps -- works on M520! Instructions are available at http://forum.mgmaps.com/viewtopic.php?t=538 under "Install Guide for Sprint/Samsung phones with GPS". Works well, tho refresh rate is not very fast. Cannot be depended as the only GPS, as I missed an exit once due to slow refresh rate, but better than nothing. Atleast u get an idea of where you are.
A few alternative good java-based gps apps below to try. It's unknown if any of them work on M520. Please update this wiki page if you try any of them out with any notes :-)
MapQuest Navigator
Garmin
Telenav
Sprint Navigator (which is just a rebranded telenav)
AmazeGPS - doesn't have a lot of phones that it supports yet, but it's FREE. So you don't have to spend money, or go through the bit torrent method.
Secret Menus
Steps to get to menu Menu Title - - Settings > Display > Press * Debug Menu Settings > Display > Press * > Press * Data Mode (Warning, changing this will screw up Vision!)
