Is there a magnifying software available for this phone? Usage is for a person who cannot hear and is legally blind, and thus font has to be a minimum of 15 mm high. Thanks

I have an iphone and I find it to be great device, but a poor phone. How about including phone functionality in smartphone reviews?

Yet another objective review of Christopher Price, this time of T-Mobile G1, based upon the HTC Dream platform. We are to expect the same device re-branded for another carriers and eventually one model from HTC itself under their own brand. According to some rumors, there are also works in progress on non-touch screen devices (akin the landscape emulator from SDK). Who will get them branded first?

[...] And a nut shell, this phone is NOT an iPhone Killer at all. And one blog review I read said the phone is going to be lukewarm because it simply isn’t “sexy” as they put it. And I agree. It looks to robotic. I mean, the Google Maps capabilities and Gmail functions will probably be awesome. But there isn’t much in the equation that’ll make Apple’s iPhone run for cover. Or even flinch to say the least. More details and in-depth review by clicking here. [...]

Folks, please do not direct questions to just me. Despite having reviewed the G1, most of those questions can be answered by thousands of people. Dropping the "Chris" in front of people's posts... gets posts answered faster.

1) The G1 is faster than Windows Mobile, and it is certainly faster than Palm's outdated OS. There are several Treos, so I can't say what you mean by thickness. It is slightly thinner than Palm's latest Treo, the Treo Pro... but that Treo is much thinner than previous models.

2) Yes, but like with all smartphone platforms, developers may have to adapt their apps to work with different models, updates, and form-factors.

3) Not currently, but I suspect that will change once Google implements app buying.

4) Yes, the OHA consists of several handset manufacturers.

Chris,
- Is the G1 thicker, is it faster than a Palm's Treo?
- Will the Market applications be compatible with future Android phones?
- It it possible to browse the Android Market without having the G1?
- Are any of the other manufacturers or carriers working on Android phones?

Thank you for your very detailed review!

That's a two-part question (technically speaking).

We've already seen Android ported to devices like the HTC Vogue. It's simply a matter of getting the right hackers interested... there's no technical reason it couldn't be ported to any HTC Windows Mobile phone (all the way back to the original Space Needle).

However, I suspect the OHA will be less willing to seed production source code out for the entire Android platform. They did this with the betas (and for 1.0r1), but I don't think they will from here on out.

Why? Because there's nothing stopping knock-off phone makers in China from building Android phones, and not paying a dime to OHA.

Unless... the OHA is okay with that. I think Google would like that, but handset makers (HTC, Motorola, Samsung, etc) would be very unhappy to see folks resurrecting "old" hardware and running Android on it. That, in their opinion, is unholy. It's downright evil. It's as bad as taking a Windows Mobile phone from 2003, and upgrading it to Windows Mobile 6.1. And, they would probably have a fit if some company in China starts shipping a $99 Android phone.

I have no idea what the OHA will do to sort that out, but it's one of the many things that Google and the other members certainly don't see eye-to-eye on.
