Samsung Instinct to Cost $199.99 After Rebate

Samsung InstinctAs we’ve prevously covered, the price and targeting of Samsung’s Instinct will be crucial in response to the advent of iPhone 3G.

Today, Sprint distributed internally the pricing for the Samsung Instinct. And, indeed, the price has responded to the announcement of iPhone 3G.

The initial full retail price of the phone will cost $449.99. There will be a $150 instant rebate with new two-year agreements (standard for most Sprint devices). Sprint will add on top of that, a $100 mail-in rebate specifically for Instinct.

Combining both rebates, the final price of Instinct will be $199.99.  That is the same price as iPhone 3G, taking into account the two-year agreement on both carriers. However, unlike iPhone 3G, Instinct will be retailed in-store taking into account both prices, so that customers understand that they can purchase the device without renewing their contract.

Both AT&T and Sprint are imposing odd rate hikes on these new wave of devices. Instinct will require a Sprint Everything or Simply Everything plan to be used on. This forces existing Sprint customers, and prospective Sprint customers, to sign onto more lucrative plans for the carrier. And, as previously reported, AT&T will be charging iPhone 3G customers a $10/month premium over the previous iPhone… an amount which will allow the company to recover its ~$200 subsidy on the device.

Technically, iPhone 3G is $.99 cheaper than Instinct, Apple typically doesn’t tack the $.99 onto their products, while Sprint typically does. Just wanted to point that out to prevent confusion.

Will anyone care? Not really.

Jeff on June 11th, 2008, 2:50 pm

Now that iPhone is 3G, I am actually considering leaving Sprint. I have no interest in the Instinct. The only thing keeping me on Sprint is the price of their 3G service. Hope they are doing market research by asking their actual customers what they want.

Mojo on June 11th, 2008, 2:55 pm

I guess the “Device Wars” have officially begun. I guess what’s really funny is that Apple created the only true iPhone killer by creating the iPhone 3G. The Instinct is definitely a cool phone, but it just doesn’t have the legs to win this race. The Instinct is more of a competitor with the HTC Touch. I can guarantee that there will be more people camping out in front of AT&T stores than there will be camping out in front of Sprint stores on their respective launch dates. Oh well, I’ll be waiting for the Blackberry Bold CDMA myself, and won’t be getting an iPhone 3G or Samsung Instinct to replace my Curve anytime soon.

this is a fail on sprints part… out the door its $100 more than the iphone (mail in rebates suck)… if you even qualify for the $150 instant discount.

[...] Phonenews has the scoop on the Instinct’s pricing and that $200 price tag definitely competes against the 8GB iPhone 3G. It has a retail price of $449, but you can obtain a $150 with a 2-year plan and just to sweeten the deal, Sprint is adding on another $100 MIR just for the Instinct. Just like the iPhone 3G, you’ll have to tack on one of Sprint’s pricier plans, but it’s still a great price for a great phone. Look for our review on Friday. [...]

EJ on June 11th, 2008, 4:25 pm

Phonenews had the right idea here… a cheap Instinct was a chance to steal back some scraps of market share. An identically priced iPhone competitor? Makes no sense.

Michael on June 11th, 2008, 4:45 pm

Actually….it makes perfect since to price it identical to the iPhone. With Sprint’s Everything plans, you get a whole lot more than you do with any of AT&T’s plans. Spend the same amount of money on the phone and get a much better deal on the plans.

The Instinct is also available on the Talk/Message/Data share plans that are coming out on 6/15/08, in addition to the Everything plans.

Justin on June 11th, 2008, 6:23 pm

so if i’m renewing my plan it’ll cost $200 too?

cg3772 on June 11th, 2008, 6:40 pm

Uh, no.

I checked .. The Sprint Everything plan for $70 gives me more than what I’m getting now, and I’ll be paying less per month.

Mireya on June 11th, 2008, 8:49 pm

Wow — I am disappointed! A “mandatory” upgrade to buy this phone? I simply wanted a phone that could also be used as a media (music/movie) device. I didn’t want to upgrade. My contract is up…and I am seriously considering a move to AT&T to enjoy the iPod. Sprint has really DROPPED THE BALL on this one! Their service record is less-than-stellar. And now, mandatory upgrades to purchase a phone???

Yes, I think that it is time to consider a move to AT&T.

It’s tough to believe that Sprint delayed the pricing decision until after iPhone 3G announcement just to drop the ball and price Instinct (with just w/ 2GB card, if I recall) the same as 8GB iPhone and that AFTER the $100 MIR. Instinct may be a very nice phone (with a junky browser though), but I don’t see the logic behind this decision. That, and the decision to marry Instinct only to select plans, is rather risky IMHO.

According to cnet.com:

…The Omnia will be showcased at CommunicAsia 2008, which kicks off tomorrow until June 20 in Singapore. Samsung’s flagship touchscreen mobile is expected to roll out in Southeast Asia this week, followed by Europe in July, and other key worldwide markets (including China) a month later. The 16GB version will retail for S$1,098 (US$722.37), while the 8GB version will be available later….

LD612 on June 18th, 2008, 10:41 am

Do you think it’s going to be hard to get Instinct when it comes out? I mean I really dont want to be camping outside of a sprint store to buy a phone on my day off…LoL. Actually I changed my plan last Saturday b/c I really went in to buy the HTC Touch and the Sprint guy told me not to and to wait for this phone. Now…I can’t actualy buy this phone when it first comes out. I have to wait until the 23rd b/c my new plan isn’t effective until then so that my billing doesn’t split up and get crazy and if I buy it early I can’t the instant rebate of renewing my contract. So I’m crossing my fingers this isn’t another iPhone mania…does anyone know my odds?

Christopher Price on June 18th, 2008, 11:51 am

We’ve already followed-up with the added price drop:

I’m sorry to say this but you all have way too much time on your hands. You people get a riled up about a cell phone. Maybe some of you should channel this energy into raising your kids right or getting off you butts to get a job.

Ummm….too much time? Didn’t you just read all this and post a comment? Your advise should only be given if you yourself have taken it.

I am a SM at a corp Sprint store and Im not saying this because I have both phones, Instinct and a Iphone 3G.. Instinct wins.. I test both phones together and I thought the IPhone would overtop the Instinct but it didn’t. I was RALLY shocked. My co-workers continue to ask my why do I have a competitors phone but hey, Im the PDA demonstrator of our region, why not have it? It’s not like I take it to conventions and compare. Only suggestion is, if you purchase the Instinct, get on of the Everything plan. Cause that’s not lasting too long. I cant say when it will end but it’s best to lock in the plan now. You dont HAVE to get a Everything Plan when you buy the phone, but it comes out better when you’re not getting $49.99 300-min Free Incoming, $10 1000 Txt, $25 Data Package (which you have to have inorder to recieve the $100 MIR unless you have SE plans)

**Here’s the thing.. They dont want customers to upgrade to the Instinct, they prefer New Cust.. They’ll try not to upgrade you, so it’s best to be consitant when speaking of upgrading**

Okay… I’m truly not intending to be rude here… but there is no way you are a SM at a Sprint Corp store… and if you are, you need to brush up on a few things. First off… it would be impossible for you to have both an Instinct and an iPhone 3G, as the iPhone 3G is not released yet. And yes, you do have to take one of the Everything or Talk/Message/Data Share plans to use the Instinct, as the billing system will not allow someone in a store to activate an Instinct ESN with anything other than one of those plan codes. Also, Sprint would be very happy to offer the phone to existing customers, which is why they sold them to existing customers who pre-registered one day before the public launch.

Anyway… I have an Instinct… and it’s cool, and I like it… but I LOVE my Blackberry Curve.

That “RALLY” is a joke. quite expository if ignorance. Not unlike sprint’s ignorance of the word “everything.” The “Everything” plan does not include phone as modem. Im no genius, but doesn’t that DISQUALIFY the “everything” classification?…
