Sprint has begun to roll out its latest update for the now venerable LG Optimus S Android smartphone that bumps up the device to Gingerbread and brings with a spate of new features and fixes. The following features are noteworthy in the new update:
- Volume adjustment from handset when backlight is off and in a Bluetooth call
- Initiation of a 3-way call in certain markets
- Updated color scheme (includes darker notification bar and black-based menus)
- New on-screen keyboard (supports multi-touch input and a smart auto-correction function)
- Improved cut-paste functionality
- New integrated download application
- Updated camera application
- Power management and dedicated task management applications
The update will be rolled out over the next 10 days, with no immediate word on when the Virgin Mobile version will receive its own update.

Not sure if you heard, but the Optimus upgrade to Gingerbread seems to be a big failure. Tons of issues, documented here (http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/335143#335143) and here (http://gizmoninja.com/2011/09/20/gingerbread-not-so-sweet-for-lg-optimus-s/). Keyboards not working, word suggestions not working, USB charging not working, USB mass storage not working, and even one instance of a brick (my friend had that issue).
It seems this update has been pulled. I saw the notification in my status bar this morning, and ignored it and did not apply the update. Since then it has gone away. I went to my System Updates and Firmware menus under Settings, and both now claim my phone is up to date even though I am still on 2.2.2.
