Sprint has begun including the following notice to customers receiving their latest invoice:
Regulatory Charge/Ts&Cs Changes
Effective 1/1/10, the Regulatory Charge will increase to $0.40/line. Visit Sprint Ts&Cs or sprint.com/taxesandfees for details; also effective 1/1/10, the Sprint Terms & Conditions (Ts&Cs) are changing. Please review them carefully at sprint.com or on request.
The updated terms and conditions for 2010 are now available for review, while the taxes and fees table has yet to be updated with the new regulatory charge information. As is the case with material changes, Sprint customers have 30 days from the receipt of the notice in the invoice to cancel service without a termination fee if one does not agree with the changes.
Update: In addition to the above changes, Sprint will also be assessing an additional $4.99 fee on accounts with spending limits on the same day, which is another material change to the agreement.
Update: The ETF Out is now in effect. For more details, check our follow-up article.

When would a consumer consider that they have “receipt of the notice”?? Today or 1/1 or somewhere in between??
The notice is in your next bill. The 30 days begins when you get your bill, not on January 1.
So if I called up Sprint and cancelled within that 30 days, would my account automatically be cancelled if I ported my numbers over to another wireless carrier? In other words would it stop the billing at the day of my carrier switch?
Dang, why is Sprint doing this now? I was hoping they would do something like this when the new devices hit North America late next year. It’s too early, I’m not ready to leave sprint yet.
Hopefully there is some minor change that lets me leave when WM 7 hits and I’m ready to go back to GSM (or Verizon LTE)…
can I sign up today and then cancel when it goes into effect, in order to get a free phone?
What is the reason for this increase? Has the federal government raised the charges to warrant sprint in raising theirs? This is kind of dumb for sprint since they are still the only cell phone company loosing thousands of customers every month. I don’t understand. Sprint starts to make great improvements and looks like they are pulling out their slump and then they make some stupid mistake like this. Unbelieveable!
Anudeep, Your first bill (within the 30 days) would include notice of the fee change. Since you would be notified of the change during the trial period, you would not be able to leave without paying the ETF later. Nice idea though… I would suggest some fiber in that moral diet however.
JJ, the main reason is that Sprint feels that few customers will cancel. Sprint also has the option to exempt certain accounts on a per-account basis… a practice they have sometimes taken in the past. So, it is possible that Sprint will change course and simply exempt customers from the fee increase, if they call in to cancel service.
So I can cancel and then start a new account with them and get a new phone
Ignore the above post.
Can I cancel my current plan then turn around and sign up a new one. My current plan is a grandfathered with free web and text. I would be signing up on a new more profitable plan. Think Sprint would allow this or do I need to wait 30 days before starting new service with them?
Sprint requires that you wait 90 days before being considered a new customer. You would have to port out (after getting the ETF waived), port the number to a prepaid service, and then port the number in after 90 days.
mark, why not just get the plan now, no contract extension? You must not be eligible for an upgrade
I called Sprint today and spoke to two different people, not very happy about the cancellation. They said the changes don’t affect the individual accounts just the business accounts. I actually don’t believe a word of what they said but unfortunately, I do not have the hard copy of the bill stating the changes the are making. Sprint actually listed the changes on the back of the page so if you try to go online to see them, youo will not be able to see them. What should I do now?

I’m surprised it is only $0.40, it could have been $1, they need every penny, even if it is costing them more account losses in the long run.
Remeber CEO D.H. needs to get paid somehow, until he gets fired that is.
Thank You
I have online billing. does anyone know where to find the notice??
@JJ and @ Don Louie and heck @Christopher Price
I know all 3 of you are very vocal in your dislike in Sprint’s service to long time customers.
I have 5 lines with 1500 mins and unlimted text, data, gps, and tv for $129 for the first two lines and $19.99 for each additional.
I am floating around the idea about switching but I really don’t think that there is a provider with that has a better value than Sprint and still has decent handsets.
Any ideas on a new provider who is comparable in cost?? T-Mobile maybe??
Hmmmmm this is saying if someone were to call sprint and ask to cancel their account with no ETF I’m able to get out of my contract?
The real change coming on January 10th is the $4.99 fee for ASL customers who havent set up automatic payments on their accounts.
What’s an ASL customer?
(A)ccount (S)pending (L)imit
How can I find out if I have an account spending limit?
I don’t have automatic payment set up and I don’t want my bill going up an extra $5.00 per month.
Will I be able to get out of the contract because of that?
Daniel, yes, you should be able to. Emphasis on should.
All carriers intentionally do not train Customer Service on ETF-Outs. We’re working on it, as you may have seen with our progress on AT&T’s March 2009 ETF Out Saga.

SaltyDawg, if you have an ASL, it will be displayed on your sprint.com account manager. When in doubt, you can call *2 and ask directly… they can tell you immediately if you have one.
And yes, that too would be an ETF out unless they opt to either waive the fee for your account (keeping things as-is) or remove your ASL (which they also can do, depending on your credit).
Well I’ve learned to avoid calling Sprint if at all possible. It almost always ends in frustration and reminds me why everyone is leaving Sprint. I can somewhat tolerate Sprint as long as I don’t have to contact them for any reason.
I don’t see anything about a spending limit online though, so I don’t know if that affects me. I’ll have to set a reminder to look for that extra charge on my bill in January and February.
@ Saltydawg
Precisely my sentiments, but as you know CEO D.H. explains it slightly differently in that, as a direct result of SPRINT’s “excellent service”, hence grounds for more layoffs!
People always cut back on their communication, before going their seperate ways, I guess he is oblivious to social behavior, among other things.
P.S. For the record my account qualifies for “ten” lines as to per CSR.
Thank You

The bottom line is…. They are GIVING their company to prepaid. Why sign a contract when you can get iden (boost) or CDMA (virgin mobile) for 50 a month unlimited. 50.00 prepaid, 100.00 post paid…. do the math.
@44
Prepaid in some cases for some people is a way better deal. But most people that want a smartphone will not choose prepay because most of the prepay options out there don’t offer smartphones and don’t allow access to evdo speeds. With a postpaid account you get evdo speeds and any smartphone you want. That is the only reason I haven’t gone prepay, otherwise I would have done it a long time ago.
The $50 unlimited is not that big of a deal anymore when you take into consideration sprints 69.99 plan. Only $20 more and you get any smartphone you want plus any mobile any time plus evdo capable phones. Any mobile anytime makes that plan almost unlimited since most people now call cell phones most of the time.
But you are right, there are some great prepay options out there for regular phones like the $30 straight talk.
Boost UNLTD unofficially works with CDMA smartphones, though more reps refuse to activate Sprint devices, it can still be done.
I’m tempted by this, but I’ve had the same phone number for nearly ten years. Thus, I’d want to port my number out. I know porting a number automatically cancels service with the previous carrier, which would probably trigger the ETF. How much of a pain in the behind will it be to argue with Sprint, after the fact, about this and getting the ETF waived post-port?
For what it’s worth, I received my sprint bill with the regulatory charge notification on page 2, and the “account supervisor” wouldn’t do anything right now b/c I haven’t yet *been charged* the new increased fee.
He says I have 30 days from the bill that actually shows the new fee.
Even more head slapping, he says that “not everyone” will see the fee increase, thus excluding them from the ability to cancel without ETF.
If I were devious bastard sprint, I’d now keep that effing small charge off my account, thus keeping me locked into the contract.
Call back and ask for another supervisor. Tell them PhoneNews.com asked Sprint and they said it was from the date of notice, as outlined in the Terms of Service.
Just talked to someone at Sprint and they said this is in the terms and conditions of the contract. So apparently they can just raise them while we’re under contract and we can’t do anything about it.

I saw in an article that the regulatory charges were increasing to .40
1:04:48 PM Ashley J
That is correct, however as a part of your Terms & Conditions, this can change at anytime.
1:06:30 PM Joe
from what I understand if I do not agree with the increase I have 30 days to cancel without penalty. Is that correct?
1:07:14 PM Ashley J
I do sincerely apologize however this would not apply to the regulatory charge increase, as it is stated in your Terms & Conditions that this is subject to change at anytime.
1:07:27 PM Joe
in addition to that I saw there’s a 4.99 fee for spending limits which is a material change
1:08:43 PM Ashley J
I do sincerely apologize however this is not a material change in which would qualify for the termination of services, upon the disagreement of the charge.

You are provided with an option, to avoid the $4.99 fee, for account spending limit customers, by enrolling your account in Auto-Pay.

I will do that. Thank you.
I was just told the same thing that Joe was in a conversation online with a Sprint rep. Sorry I closed the dialogue before I could copy the contents of the discussion, but I was basically told the exact same thing.
Bummer!
Don’t deal with e-chat. E-chat is instructed to say nothing that could be used against Sprint.
Call customer service and place the account in formal dispute. If multiple call center managers have denied you, file BBB, FCC, and State PUC complaints. If you are denied and don’t do that, you’re part of the problem.
christopher price will you be my friend? that thread was brutal. everything i wanted to say you said in a much more professional and patient manner. teach me your ways so that i’ll stop this passive aggressive behavior towards sprint customers everywhere. sincerely, Paul.
Oh, it’s only because we’ve been there. If you’ve been following our AT&T material change saga, it’s gotten to the point that AT&T appears to have hired investigators to try and quiet us.
All it does is sharpen the argumentative knife each time. Prepaid is on the rise because people are clearly sick of carriers that refuse to honor their own terms.
Anybody have any luck canceling their account(s)? I’m looking at trying this after work today.
Does anyone know if this also applies to Sprint’s Nextel service?

After chatting I did call to talk to their retention department. They did not deny that I would be able to get out of the contract but they said I have to wait until January 10th. I was told they will not be charging the $4.99 to every customer and have to see if I’m one of the lucky ones. So I will be calling back then.
They $4.99 fee isn’t new…it’s always been in the contract..so I dont think that can be used as an excuse to get out with no ETF.. you signed a contract with the stated fee, they just didn’t charge it til now.
Here is an archive.org link of the Sprint terms and conditions page from 2008, that shows the $4.99 fee:
http://web.archive.org/web/20080805013451/http://nextelonline.nextel.com/en/legal/legal_terms_privacy_popup.shtml
Archive.org link from 2008 with the $4.99 fee stated…
Terms & Conditions http://bit.ly/6yq3Lm
If this link doesn’t work, the full link is the url associated with my name.
The ToS states that “In certain areas” the $4.99 fee would apply. The material change is the expansion of “limited areas” (i.e. affiliate markets) to all areas. Customers that were not subject to the fee previously are now being materially changed into being assessed the fee.
Sprint will probably bicker, which will result in numerous BBB, FCC, and PUC complaints… and put one more nail in the failed business model of ETFs.
Ending ETF’s will mean an end to subsidized phones, which will mean more expensive phones… people are free now to get an unsubsidized/unlocked phone at a higher price, and put it on a GSM carrier, but you see how unpopular that is.
as for the $4.99 fee for ASL accounts not enrolled in AutoPay… the people this will effect are people with poor/no credit history. These people will have to consider the fact that if they do cancel their Sprint service, going to another post paid carrier will in a high depost, plus prorated charges on their first bill.. or they can pay full price for a prepaid phone, but if they want a smart phone they cannot get prepaid since their is no national carrier with a smart phone on a prepaid plan. Also, if these people were to pay their bills on time, after a year of doing so Sprint will automatically change their account status and remove the ASL, and having the Autopay requirement will encourage this.
Stephen- I assume you work for Sprint since you seem to be stuck on the “company line” here. Well, you are dead wrong on all accounts. Let me break this down for you…
#1: Ending subsidized phones would probably result in cheaper phones, not more expensive. Why? because companies know that right now, even if they charge $600+ for a phone, the carrier is going to make it adffordable for the consumer. What incentive do they have to make the price competitive if they are guaranteed so many sales by the carrier anyway? If they are forced to sell directly to the public (or at least the public pays full price) then suddenly they have to start making affordable devices if they expect to sell a lot. It would also force more competition into the market if customers could use any phone they want. What incentive does a company have to make a CDMA phone when they know Sprint won’t carry it anyway, therefore no Sprint customers will buy it (or Verizon, same difference)? With more competition comes cheaper prices.
#2: There are plenty of smartphones on prepay. Are you serious? Just a couple weeks ago I bought a used Verizon 6700, activated it on Page Plus (pre paid, ont eh Verizon network), and gave it to a friend of mine. Before I did that, I researched all of my options for a pre paid smartphone. It turns out pretty much all of them allow them. AT&T and t-Mobile you can just pop your SIM card in whatever phone you want to use. Cricket will activate any phone you want (so will page plus). Plenty of people are using Blackberries on Boost, and Boost unlimited will activate any Sprint phone. You’re out of your mind if you don’t think any prepaid service works with a smartphone.
#3: Paying full price for a phone and bypassing the subsudy IS pretty popular. You’ve been reading way too much Sprint propaganda. check out T-Mobile’s new plan offerings- based on the customer paying full price for the phone, not having a contract, and getting a cheaper monthly rate. Last time I checked, T-mobile was doing WAY better than Sprint. They are making money every quarter while Sprint is losing money, and they are adding tons of customers every quarter while Sprint is losing tons of customers. I think they know a little more about it than Sprint. In addition to that- AT&T already has a SIM card based service and it is very common for smartphone customers to buy an unlocked version withotu a contract extension. And Verizon is moving to a SIM card system within the next year or so.
I don’t mean to to let the facts get in the way of your rant, but now you may carry on…
According to the Boost Mobile website Boost will not activate a Sprint phone.
As you can see from the Q&A from the boostmobile.com website the UNLTD plan(CDMA plan that they no longer market) is only good on UNLTD phones…
Can I get Boost® Service with a used (previously active) Boost, Sprint or Nextel phone?
Monthly Unlimited, Daily Chat & Text, Pay As You Go: Yes, you can, as long as it’s an iDEN (Nextel) phone (you’ll need to ask a representative at a retailer). All you need to do is buy a Boost® Starter Kit. The Boost Starter Kit comes with a new Boost SIM card that will allow you to have Boost service (Nextel SIM cards will not work in Boost phones). The Starter Kit also comes with $10 credit you can apply to your account. If you have an old Boost SIM card that you’d like to use, you’ll be subject to a $10 reactivation fee. Certain features on Nextel phones may not work with a Boost SIM card.
UNLTD plan (c290, W385, KRZR phone only): You can activate a previously used UNLTD phone, and will have to pay for your first month of service and a $15 reactivation fee in order to get started. Only UNLTD phones can get UNLTD service.
I wouldn’t exactly call Cricket a national carrier.. As for T-Mobile, they just introduced those plans for people that don’t want a subsidized phone, so you cannot compare quarterly number and base it on a plan that was just introduced….those plans could end up being a flop… Americans tend to want their phones cheap up front, and don’t mind paying more over the life of a contract, otherwise Sprint would be doing better since their plans have been proven to be the best value(3rd party analysis, not Sprint Propoganda)
For the record i do not work for sprint… I just don’t see the problem with ETF’s.. I signed a contract knowing full well that there was that fee, I either fulfill the contract, or I cancel and pay the ETF, simple as that…
oh and one other thing… will unlocked/unsubsized phones result in more free phones? I think not..
Anyway, this is totally off topic…shall we get back to the topic at hand.
This was welcome news to me today as I went to upgrade my phone with Sprint only to be told that the Blackberry I wanted was going to be $569. I went around and around with the rep trying to do things differently and the only concession I got was that in February I would be able to get a phone upgrade with $75 off the retail price…not much help. I dont suffer stupidity lightly so I told them I would be cancelling my contract and paying the $160 for this gladly so that I could go to one of their competitors. They didnt care at all. Of course, they didnt mention this way to get out of their contract. I had to learn about it from the ATT rep that Ill be getting my iPhone from in January.
Sprint, you suck.
I thought there was also going to be a change in some of the terms and conditions of the contract, along with the additional per line fee and the 4.99 fee? Wouldn’t any change in the original terms and conditions make the contract null and void?
Stephen:
All I can tell you is to go to ebay and look for Boost blackberries. There are tons of them. And go to the Boost forum over at howard forums and see how many people are using smartphones- tons.
In addition to that, you ignored my point about Page Plus, which will activate any unlocked CDMA phone, smartphones and all. And that is on the Verizon network, so yes, it is national.
T-Mobile will still be doing better than Sprint when their next quartly reports get released, you can bet on that. Sprint’s problem is not the price of the plans, but the absolutely horrible customer service. not only are most Sprint reps that I have dealt with utterly incompetent and not fit for any job that deals with the public, but they are actually taught to have the same attitude that you displayed in this thread… The attitude that Sprint has the best and if anyone doesn’t like it they can go test the waters elsewhere. I have news for you, Sprint is NOT the cheapest anymore when you start looking at all the prepaid options that are out there now (and the prepaid providers are more than willing to activate a smartphone, contrary to your claim).
As for more free phones if they were all unlocked- I didn;t say there would be more free phones. if you think any phones are really “free: right now then you have no business debating anything in this thread. The phones are not “free” by any stretch of the imagination. You are paying for that phone every month. Everyone else that brought their own phone and didn;t even sign a contract is also paying for your “free” phone ever month. If ETF’s were abolished, that would not be the case.
If ETF’s were abolished, monthly rates would go down, and handset prices would go down too. There would also be more and better handsets available because companies would not have to worry about spending millions developing a handset only to have a carrier reject it.
And we wouldn’t have to worry about locked down and crippled handsets due to carrier restrictions either.
I have no doubt that this is going to happen eventually. And when it does, we will all be much better off.
I got my bill with the notice on it. How do I go about canceling my account? I have had nothing but issues with Sprint since October. It has been one nightmare after another. Just tonight they transfered me to SEVEN different people only to hang up on me then connect me to somebody NEW to which I had to start my complaint all over again! I am furious. Do I call the number to cancel, do I go into the store? Do I email? How do I do this to get out of this insane company?
This is great news!!! i just got a new bill online for the month of Dec. and i don’t see anything about this new contract change? i want out badly! Should I call them? go to a sprint store?….Please advise if anyone has canceled yet
for online bills, click on view current bill, then at the bottom click on important news regarding your bill…..the notice is in one of the left boxes.
and after checking the Ts and Cs, the verbage does say “30 days after the effective change”
I guess we can call and try now, but it sounds like we might have better luck after we receive our jan bill.
I’m still not seeing anything about it on my bill. can someone copy and paste it into this thread so i know what I’m looking for? I don’t ant to call Sprint unless I have to.
You do not have to wait until after Jan 1st. I called sprint last Friday and already canceled. It took about 30 mins on the phone and a LOT of explaining. They tried to pull a few fast ones on me but I read through all the docs before and was ready to stand my ground.
I told them that I did not have to wait until Jan 1st as the contract already changed but I was not going to be charged until Jan 1st. They accepted that answer and canceled my account.
I am now a verizon customer and should get my Eris tomorrow!
@bobby:
Did you lose your phone number when you went to Verizon? How does the porting process work in a situation like this? You call sprint and cancel your acocunt, then call verizon and open a new pne, but do they still port your number? Or how does that work?
I had already paid my bill through December so I asked them to keep the account active until I ported my number over, which they were fine with.
OMG it worked…..i just got off the phone with them with NO CANCELLATION FEES!!!!
Okay, so here’s the deal…
I want to get out of my contract. I want to keep my phone numbers though. I’m thinking I’ll port to a prepaid service for 30 days or 90 days (or whatever) and then port back in with no contract after that.
Can this be done? Where should I start? How long would I have to be on prepaid? And what prepaid service would work best with my Touch Pro 2′s?
It worked for me, too. Took about 15 minutes and a bit of rhetorical excess. They transferred me to cancellations and I have until January 11 to port my numbers w/ no fees.
God bless the USA and a minor in political science.
I just changed my plan 3 days ago online. I don’t remember there being a user agreement change notification. I hope that I can still cancel…
I am still not seeing anything about this on my online bill. Going to try to get out of my contract anyway, but it not showing on my bill might be an issue…
@SaltyDawg:
Here’s the part on page 2 of my bill from Dec 5th:
Regulatory Charge/Ts&Cs Changes
Effective 1/1/10, the Regulatory Charge will
increase to $0.40/line. Visit Sprint Ts&Cs or
sprint.com/taxesandfees for details; also
effective 1/1/10, the Sprint Terms &
Conditions (Ts&Cs) are changing. Please
review them carefully at sprint.com or on
request.
I still don’t see that. I don;t have my December bill yet, so that is probably why. I guess I’ll have to weait a few more days…
Sprint has confirmed this is an ETF Out. We’ll have an update with Sprint’s official word shortly.
I have been on the phone with them like 5 times today and pretty much gotten different stories on the regulatory charge every time. Some told me it applies to everyone, the last guy I think was completely lying to me in saying that it only applies to 500,000 customers. I mean, why would only 500,000 customers have to pay this and not the others? Also, I was trying to find it on my last bill, but apparently because my billing cycle flips on the 28th of each month, it was not on my last months bill and now to be sure I have to wait until my next bill, which will not be available until after the 28th of this month. I was just about to cancel anyway today based on what some of the reps told me but now I am nervous about it. I am alos unsure of how to port over my number and confirm that I won’t be charged the 200 at the same time. I feel like this will end up being a major fight. I want them to release me from my contract and then let me port over the number. Is this possible?
Ok so I have a question. My wife and I are with Helio who was then bought out by Virgin Mobile who was recently purchased by Sprint. My wife received a call from them the other day telling her about the recent buy out and asking if she wanted to switch to Sprint fully. If she did, would she be able to have the termination fee waived and go to another provider? We definitely DO NOT want to be with Sprint.
I also called sprint yesterday and they also told me that not everyone was included in this. I heard that the .40 cent increase applies to everyone and the 4.99 is the one that is for the ASL customers and so on. They wouldnt let me cancel until I got my invoice which by then they will prob take the charge off my bill and ill have to stay just because i called early seems kinda shady to me
I feel the same way, now that I called like 5 times yesterday I wonder if they will simply remove the charge from me so that I am stuck. I hope I did not shoot myself in the foot on this one. The other route I could take is just keep calling and annoying them and wasting their time until they want to pay me 200 to leave…
Chris,
After reading your update, my question is: If the change affects me or not, since it is a material change to the contract, is that in violation of the T&C? When I started reading the online terms and conditions to the retention department, the lady transferred me and i got the wonderful christmas sprint music. She insisted I had to of course wait, as I’m sure Sprint does not want to deal with this now.
My question of course is because, whether the $4.99 charge affects me or the increase of .20 per line (regulatory), since it is a change in contract, and a material change (monetary), shouldn’t that *itself* justify the waive of ETF fees? Obviously I am *NOT* agreeing with this increase in charge, whether it be .20cents or $4.99, and neither of them were in my contract.
So, if I continue with them, I’m essentially saying “change my contract as you see fit, charge me fees to recover your losses, and refuse to waive my ETF as PER SPRINT’S OWN TERMS AND CONDITIONS”, correct? That’s like me signing a rental agreement only to have the monthly rent change because the landlord had to go to court and pay for his court fees.
Sorry to rant, but I just got screamed at and talked over while reading factual evidence, and then disconnected. No worries, I recorded the conversation.
For the folks that have left and are leaving…where are you going to??
Who has a great value comparable with sprint on unlimted text, data, at least 400 mins??
Just about any prepaid plan is cheaper than Sprint these days. T-Mobile’s no contract plans are pretty close (or even cheaper) than Sprint’s 2 year contract rates too.
The no contract plans may be cheaper, but if you don’t have a T-mobile 3G compatible GSM phone laying around you will have to pay full price for the phone, either up front or via payments(if you go into the store)… If you do sign a contract, 500 minutes, plus unl messages, and unl web is $59.99(non-blackberry), plus more for the Navigation which sprint includes..
if you want blackberry it goes up to $79.99, and still no navigation.
So you have to figure, are you really going to cancel a service over $.40 cents per month..
As far as prepaids, yes even boost is cheaper, but you’ll have to pay full price for the phone, again is $.40 really that big of a deal?
Me, i’ll probably leave one of my lines thats already out of contract, and go to T-mobile in march when they get the HTC HD2, and Leave my MiFi with Sprint(Love this device by the way)
Just to clarify- T-Mobile has a no contract plan that includes talk, plus text, plus web- on smartphones, for $79.99. If you only want 1000 minutes (and unlimited texts and web) it only costs $69.99. For 500 minutes (unlimited texts and web) it’s $59.99.
For family plans they have unlimited talk text and web, on smartphones, for $139.99- which includes the first 2 lines. Each additional line $55 for smartphones.
If you only need 1500 minutes (unlimited text and web) it’s $119.99 for the first 2 lines and additional lines (smartphones) cost $30 each.
If you only need 750 minutes (with unlimited texts and web), it costs $109.99 per month for the first 2 lines, and additional lines (smartphones) are $30 each.
Oh yes, and it’s a given, you either need to own a phone or you need to buy a phone. Unlike Sprint though, T-Mobile doesn’t require the phones to be T-Mobile branded. You can get any GSM phone you want (provided it has the proper frequencies) and just pop your SIM card in.
And, again, all of that is without a contract- regular prices, no discounts, and smartphones don’t cost extra (dumbphones are actually cheaper, I listed the smartphone prices).
Sprint, WITH a 2 year contract, is $99.99 for unlimited everything. If you only want 900 minutes it’s $89.99, and for 450 minutes it’s $69.99.
Family plan with unlimited everything is $189.98 for the first 2 lines, additional lines are $89.99 each.
If you only want 3000 minutes, it’s $169.99 for the first 2 lines, additional lines are $19.99 each.
If you only want 1500 minutes (and this is the cheapest Sprint familyt plan that has unlimited texts and data), it’s $129.99 for the first 2 lines, additional lines are $19.99 each.
And- again, with Sprint you have to sign a 2 year contract. You also need to buy a Sprint branded phone, if you don’t have one layng around. You can’t use any old CDMA phone, it has to be Sprint branded.
I’m not seeing the argument here. Now, if you’re talking about the Sprint referral plan, then Sprint is cheaper. But just everyday lan to everyday plan- T-Mobile is clearly cheaper than Sprint.
you’re actually forgetting some stuff…
Sprint Includes Sprint TV, Sprint Radio, Sprint Navigation, Sprint NFL Mobile, if you don’t want unlimited minutes, Sprint has Any mobile anytime on their Plans with data, T-Mobile actually got rid of their MyFav’s service…
By the way, you are neglecting to include the price of a phone in the cost of T-Mobile’s no contract plans, most people if they are coming from Sprint won’t have a TMO 3G compatible GSM phone laying around, I keep saying TMO 3G compatible, because they use a different 3G frequency than AT&T so even though AT&T’s phones will work, they will not have 3G.
Again I’ll say it, American’s don’t want to pay upfront for a phone, they’d rather get the phone at a discount, and pay more over the long term… check out this article here by sasha segan from PCMAG.com “Your Free Phone Cost $240″ – http://bit.ly/7zP7rc (case sensitive) if this link doesn’t show up, i made the link associated with my name the link to the article. if the link still doesn’t show up, just go to their site.
A few htings…
#1: All of that stiff Sprint includes can be found for free on just about any smartphone. For example, Bing can replace Sprint Navigation for free, Google Navigation will do an ever better job at replacing it when it is available. Skyfire and justin.tv easily replace Sprint tv- and way better. There are tons of free radio services, so I won;t even start on that one.
#2: I am not neglecting the cost of the phone. On the contrary, I mentioned that you’d need to buy a T-Mobile phone. I also mentioned that you’d need to buy a Sprint phone if you went with Sprint. Check the prices on that- like for like, T-Mobile phones are cheaper. Right now, the Touch Pro 2 is $539.99 full retail from T-Mobile. The Sprint version is $599.99 full retail.
#3: I disagree that Americans want to pay more over the length of the contract. If this were tru, Sprint would not be requiring a 2 year contract even if you pay full retail for a device. AT&T does the same thing (at least the reps told me they did a while back). Peopl etake the discount and sign a contract (paying more in the long run) because there is little choice. Now that T-Mobile offers a choice, I bet we’ll see some real change there. Verizon also offers month to month if you pay full retail (and they are the largest carrier, so there must be something to that).
And yes, you can get any old AT&T phone and it will work on T-Mobile. You won’t have 3G, but you will still have EDGE data. Compare that to Sprint who won’t even activate a Verizon phone, so you won’t get jack unless you have a Sprint branded phone.
I think I made the point though- Sprint is not the cheapest. You came in here acting liek Sprint customers couldn’t possible find a cheaper rate. We now know that almost any prepaid is cheaper, and T-Mobile is cheaper across the board- with no contract even.
Oh yeah, by the way- T-Mobile will let you buy a device and break the cost of it up into 20 equal payments if you want. And this is still without a contract- you just pay off the remaining balance of the device if you leave before it’s paid off. So the sticker shock from the phone price isn’t even an issue either- on T-Mobile that is.

Done deal for me as well. I called Sprint based on everyone else, 1st contact cancelations who told me this was true that I can cancel without ETF fee. They noted my account and transferred me to account services. Accoutn services then saw the note and confirmed shortly after. I have until March to port my number and the ETF will be waived.
Just got off the phone with a rep, told me I have to wait until the fee is assessed before I can cancel the lines on my account!?
WOW!!!! That was easy. Called, told rep I did not agree with the Regulatory Charge. He said he was sorry to hear that. He let me out of the contract and said my account would close whenever my number is ported. YEAH!!!!
Just got off the phone with Sprint and, boy they suck! Talked to the cancellation department who transferred me to the credit department for an unknown reason where I was told I didn’t need to speak with them so they transferred me back to the cancellation department where someone picked up and hung up on me. I called the cancellation department back and was told that I could not cancel until after the effective date.
I am just wondering, what strategy did those of you who have canceled your contracts already use?
Kasi: I was told the same thing, after doing some reading, and being completely technical, you need to wait until Jan. 1 to be able to cancel.
But I pose the same question, For those of you who already cancelled your contracts, what is your due date, and how did you convince them? They would not even talk to me after they told me that.
Im anxiously awaiting January 1st so that I can cancel my Sprint service. The reason? I wanted to upgrade to a Blackberry from a Rant and was told it would be $569. Not kidding. I thought this was ridiculous and tried very hard with the instore rep to get her to work with me as I felt that was completely unreasonable. She never budged and I finally agreed to pay the ETF in February. I went directly to ATT and they were kind enough to offer me a iPhone and unlimited data (400 minute talk time but thats ok, I dont talk much on it and they rollover) for about $80 a month and they were very helpful in telling me how I can avoid the ETF with Sprint. I hope I can pull this off but I usually have terrible luck.
Hi- I am desperatley wanting out of my contract as well. I am looking on my online bill, and see the verbage about the Regulartory Fee increase, however I do not see the increase on my bill that is due 01/04/10. What does the fee show up as on your bill? Does anyone know?
AWESOME!!! Just called sprint and have the fees waived in 5mins. Told the Rep that I didn’t agree with the Regulatory Charge increase that I saw on the back of my bill, even though I wasn’t charged the fee yet, was still able to get this process taken care real easy. Now I’m on a month to month plan, and I can port my number anytime without being charged an ETF. To solidify your reason to cancel, tell them that you’ve been experiencing a lot of dropped calls in your house lately, they’ll try to send you something to hook up to your computer and make your calls better, but disagree. Well good luck canceling.
I am not sure if this effects me. I just signed up with sprint in july and now need to switch out for some crazy family issues (wife calls her mom lots). Anyway I took a look at all of my bills and I have been charge .40 for a regulatory fee since I signed up. I’m assuming this means I am not eligable?
I just got off of the phone with Sprint and they told me the same thing, that I needed to wait until Jan. 1st to call and cancel. They did confirm I would be able to cancel without an ETF fee. They broke it down for me in a few different ways: If you have a:
CORPORATE LIABLE ACCOUNT – The changes are included in your contract and you will not be eligable to have the ETF fee waived.
CORPAORATE INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNT – You are eligable to cancel and have the ETF fee waived.
ASL (Account Spending Limit) – You are eligable to cancel and have the ETF fee waived.
They also mentioned that we can do this online, and do not need to call into Sprint to cancel. They said to go to Sprint.com/taxes&Fees and we can opt out from there. (I have yet to go online and check to see if this is true)
The one thing I am a little confused about however is they told me that I would not be able to be put on a month to month basis. For those of you who have been able to do this what exactly should I be asking for when I call back after the 1st.
Andre… just wondering how you got put on a month to month. I called 5 minutes ago and the retention person told me that their policy is to cancel the contract and the service. I told them that I am still interested in keeping them on a month to month basis for now, but I don’t agree with them just changing the contract on me. After all, if I told them I want to change the contract and pay $.40 less every month, they would say go to hell buddy. So anyway I think i’m going to take the same approach and say to hell with them, and switch to Verizon.
AMH — the link you posted doesn’t work? Wondering if it was a typo? Please post the corrected link.
Thanks!
Sorry – it is Sprint.com/taxesandfees
I do not see where we can cancel from here, and I personally would want some sort of confirmation that they have removed the EFT fee when canceling the account.
Good Luck!! Update us once you have canceled! Happy Cancelling!
When you cancel, do you have to pay your current bill? I have a bill that is due like the 10th or something like that. I am planning on canceling tomorrow, first thing. Will my bill still be due? Or maybe pro-rated?
I called Sprint and they said I had to wait until my first bill to see if I was effected. Also they will not let you do month to month because they have to cancel service. I told them that we were having trouble with getting calls and she went ahead and did it. I told her I wanted my number and she canceled the contract and all I have to do is go to the other provider they will port our number and then sprint service will be canceled. Good luck.
I am pretty clueless when it comes to stuff like this so please bare with me.
Looked at the lastest bill fom Nov 28-Dec 27…
I just talked to several at Sprint and they stated that they cannot tell if the change will affect me. I already have been paying a .40 regulatory charge. The rep stated it was a .20 cent new charge for me..??? And that I couldn’t do anything til the new billing period ended on Jan 27 and I’d only be able to opt out if the new charge affected me. How can they not already tell if we’re being affected? Makes no sense. If I keep calling as some of you have, will I eventually get a rep that will cancel my acct, waive the fee and port my # without paying extra?
I am already pretty ticked off with Sprint. They billed me an extra $40 by mistake on this last bill.
Ive also noticed after viewing my last 4 bills that the price of my bill has differed, also the sprint charges and the govt ones. My bill seems to reall flunctuate.
Can someone please help me understand all this better?
Thanks- Cathy
[...] Awhile back, we reported on Sprint’s regulatory fee increase, and how it is a material change that enables you to cancel service, sans termination fee. Well, [...]
The ETF Out is now in effect, more details in our new article:
http://www.phonenews.com/sprint-phonenews.com-team-up-to-help-etf-out-go-smoothly-9864/
Canceled service last night. When we called, the guy kept saying that we would have to wait until it was shown on our bill; however, when we read the line in the terms and conditions that says you can cancel without an ETF because of a material change to our contract and you have 30 days from the effective date — his tone changed. Then he tried to tell us he had to get permission from his manager who was conveniently not in office that day. My husband then told him we also wanted to cancel service because we don’t get reception in our house and have to go outside to make calls, that is why we were taking advantage of the changes. The guy canceled our contract after that.
Thanks for all the updates! Don’t let these salespeople push you around! Read your terms and conditions and know your rights before you call. They will tell you anything to keep you around.
Wonder how long till sprint is no more?
I called up today Sunday the 3rd to cancel and was told that the change hasn’t been applied to my account and they won’t know until my next bill. I also told them that I no longer get bills because somehow I was pushed onto that unwanted green thing where I don’t get paper statements and therefore can’t keep an eye on what they’re doing. I’m going to be angry if this 40 cent change doesn’t affect me because I want out.
It worked!!! You really need to stand your ground on the phone with these people. It will take about a half hour of getting bounced around. But that only helped me to practice my “speech” … you MUST say the right things. Take your time, speak slowly and clearly, because you must say that you saw a new Regulatory fee increase on your bill which constitutes a material change to the Agreement and for this reason you would like to exercise your right to cancel your contract without any early termination fees. Make sure you get that all out! Then they will try to get you to admit the “underlying problem” of why you wanna cancel service but DO NOT oblige them. Insist that it is for the reason you stated (regulatory increase to $.40). They will continue to try to get you to say something but don’t. Things I heard that you probably will too: “Sir, this fee will not apply to all accounts, I do not see you’ve been charged for this on your bill, so I can’t do anything until I see it, you’ll have to wait until your next bill and see if it appears”. Okay, here’s where you need to really stand your ground. Here’s how I replied – ‘Now wait a second, right here on p.2 of my current bill I was notified that this change would begin on 1/1/10. According to your Terms of Service I’ve got the right to cancel without ETF if I call within 30 days of the EFFECTIVE date of the change. It says nothing about the billing date’. So quoting from the TOS worked for me. They will say anything to end the call without canceling you. So you must remain focused on your mission, don’t let them bs you, and do not get off the phone until your mission is accomplished. Also, make sure you write down the names of the reps you’re speaking with. Oh, and after you’re successful call back again. You’ll get a different rep this time. Just ask them to confirm the status of your account, and make sure it clearly states in their computer system that you will not be charged any ETF’s. That very last step was important for me because the idiot didn’t properly enter the info in his computer, which would have caused me to be billed for ETF’s… which would have been more headaches. I’ll be calling back again to confirm, confirm, confirm.
I’m not sure what the deal is with porting your number. What I do know is that the second you port out it automatically cancels your existing Sprint service. I’m not gonna risk it – I’ll just let my service completely cancel and then look for a new company. If at that time I cannot port, big deal, I’ll have a new cell number.
Hurray! It worked! I am FINALLY out of my contract with SPRINT and free to go elsewhere!
It took 3 calls today to get the job done! The first guy was MORE THAN helpful and willing to waive the ETF fees, no questions asked, but of course my signal faded and I had to call back. The 2nd guy was the EXACT OPPOSITE. He was RUDE and unwilling to help me at all. He came up with a story as to why he could not cancel that I hadnt even heard yet. I disconnected the call and called back a 3rd time. This time it was a woman, and she was more than helpful. She canceled my contract and waived the fees. Mission accomplished!
I called back and confirmed that the account was in fact canceled and that the fees were waived. I will most likely call back a couple more times to confirm just to be sure!
i just called and had them cancel. i was told that the eft will be waived and if i want to port the number. i can port number and then call back and have the fee’s waived. so i called and had them note the reason why i was terminating my contract. then im goin to port. then call back and have fee waived. i had her email me the notes she placed on my account with her name and employee number
ill let u know what happens

Done deal for me, followed Felipe on January 4th, 2010, 7:49 am Post. Basically they zero out your contract. confirmed by checkign online and my contract expired effective today. can port my number out within 30days. Nexus One already delivered so will be trying that one now on no contract t-mobile plan.
I have a question. I signed contract with Sprint on July 2009. Will I effect with this new regulatory fee? I am the one who wants to get out from this company.
One more question, do I have to see my January’s bill before calling to terminate the service?
On my most recent bill (Dec 29, 2009) the bill stated the following:
Regulatory Charge/Ts&Cs Changes
Effective 1/1/10, the Regulatory Charge will increase to $0.40/line.
Per the Sprint terms and conditions:
If a change we make to the Agreement is material and has a material adverse effect on Services under your Term Commitment, you may terminate each line of Service materially affected without incurring an Early Termination Fee only if you: (a) call us within 30 days after the effective date of the change; and (b) specifically advise us that you wish to cancel Services because of a material change to the Agreement that we have made. If you do not cancel Service within 30 days of the change, an Early Termination Fee will apply if you terminate Services before the end of any applicable Term Commitment.
——–
After receiving the notice of this materially adverse change, I contacted Sprint, was disconnected once when attempting to speak to a supervisor, and then finally ended up speaking with a supervisor named Antonio (AXH9835) who repeatedly denied my request to have my account marked so that no ETF would be applied when I ported my numbers away (or mark my account as fulfilled). I specifically stated that per the Terms and Conditions I was contacting them within 30 days of the effective date of the change (per my bill) and that they were required per the contract to allow me to cancel my contract and port my numbers to another carrier without an ETF. He again rudely denied my request stating that even though the Terms and Conditions were stated as a described that they were under no obligation to cancel my contract.
Up until now I have been a relatively happy Sprint customer, but with this materially adverse change and my extremely poor experiences with the customer support department with respect to discussing these changes, once I have received confirmation that there will be no ETF applied, I will be porting my numbers to another carrier right away.
This is insane…you follow Sprint’s written instructions for dealing with this sort of thing and are rudely denied (how can you even deny this – it’s written clearly in their legal agreements?). I *was* a happy Sprint customer, but they’ve now lost my business. Beware of this company’s tricky maneuvering tactics.
Follow up:
After multiple phone calls (mostly with irate CSRs), I finally got one that was very interested in working with me. He was able to give me a $20/month credit to stay with Sprint and was very helpful – he reminded me why I stay with Sprint. Their customer service is generally excellent. It is too bad that I had to jump through so many hoops to get someone that really cared about my business.
Done deal for me as well. I also followed the advice from the “Felipe on January 4th, 2010, 7:49 am Post”. Called 888-211-4727 and the first person i spoke with followed suit as mentioned in the other post. I stood my ground and the rep asked if i wanted to be escalated to the resolution team and i said yes. A few minutes went by and she came back on and said that her supervisor approved the cancellation without the ETF. They sent me an email confirmation as well.
Well, after 24 years with sprint home, cell, and internet service, I dumped them. Enough of this! Who’s in charge of my finances and decisions to buy things, I am. I have finally come to the edge of the cliff. Sprint and no one else will push me around…telling me how I should pay a bill, autopay. Absolutely not! I’ve never used the credit that was extended to me. So on the 5th, I immediately had my number ported to another carrier. I bought a pay as you go plan. This is good enough for me. No taxes, no surcharges, and I’m saving 430.00 a year. It’s all about savings for me now. Heads Up, if you decide to cancel, please print out all your statements, if needed. Why? Well, I checked my account the very next day and they wiped me out of their system like I never existed. Unbelievable! Look, I’m at the point, if I have to use two cans and string to talk, so be it. No more fatting the pockets of corporations.
When it looks like a pig, chances are it is a pig!
First off, I want to express that the supervisor I spoke with on the phone was courteous and helpful and made every attempt, given by corporate Sprint, to address and resolve my concern.
Unfortunately, corporate Sprint had made questionable limits on what could or could not be provide by its supervisors to resolve my concerns.
Corporate Sprint believes, and has instructed its employees, that this letter and $4.99 monthly fee outlines a customer benefit. However, it is obvious that a benefit would offer a customer a discount to create a desired action rather than impose a fee otherwise.
As I do not see how using auto pay to make monthly payments rather than my current payment method would provide Sprint with any cost savings, Sprint has assessed a penalty as a result of my decision. I presently have the freedom to use the sprint.com website to pay my bill a number of ways including credit card, debit card, checking account, and savings account. Corporate Sprint has decided this freedom is worth a fee of $4.99 per month.
As a result of Sprint’s decision:
* I will not be renewing my subscription at the end of my contract date.
* I will not provide any word of mouth marketing to promote Sprint.
* I will actively support any sprint customer discontent legally available including Internet websites, chat rooms, and consumer support groups.
* I will pursue, support and advocate any class action suits that result from Sprint’s decision.
* I will enjoy seeing how AT&T, Verizon, T-mobile, and other competitors will capitalize on Sprint’s lack of insight with this decision.
If any Sprint employees are part of this group, I understand that you do not have direct voice in corporate matters. My hope is to teach you the difference between a benefit and a penalty. And to help you understand that if a company is attempting to generate immediate cash flow by imposing a penalty to its customers when that penalty does not justify a company expenses, the stability of the company is in question.
For all others, the Internet is a strong voice. We consumers have much more power over the success and failure of a business than in the past.
I must say in the past their customer service was pretty good. I did go to customer retention about this auto pay and they didn’t seem to care; tried to tell me how great a program this is. Right!
And by the way, I was very smart to print out all my invoices for 2009 taxes. Ha Ha! I’m so happy about my choice to take this matter into my own hands. It’s nice to have choices, isn’t it?
I just checked my Sprint bill and the reg charge didn’t increase on my invoice! It is still $.20. Anyone know what to do?
WOW! It worked…and can i just say Im AMAZED THAT IT DID! I stuck to my guns, used verbatim what many have used here, and after speaking with the cancelation reps sups its done. As soon as I port my #’s….which will be tomorrow with ATT, call back tomorrow night to sprint to confirm the porting, then on 1/31 when my acct cycles with the ETF’s charges on it I again refer to the material changes and the call today to sprint and they will be waived. I asked to have osmething emailed to me, she advsd she couldnt email me anything and nothing will show til ported, so I trust she kept her word. I spoke with Ivey and she was very professional and courtious and I assured her I will give her a good review when I get the survey call. INterestingly enough, her sup admitted to me that this is sprints fault for not making it clear that this should be from the DATE IT IS BILLED ON YOUR ACCOUNTS and that this happened the last time the did a change in terms and that you would assume they would have learned their mistake that time and corrected the wording on the bill but they didnt and he appologized. SO tomorrow I will be going to ATT and getting my beloved Iphone and I couldnt be happier. So now from the devil I knew to the new devil I dont know lol…gotta love cell phone carriers!
I just got off the phone with Sprint. I spoke to Alvin who was very helpful and accomodating. To make things easier for yourself, dial *2 Talk, then 5 (for more options), then 6 (for cancellation dept). You may be placed on hold for a minute or two. I was on hold for about 15 seconds. Also, have your pin # ready.
When Alvin asked me what my issue was, I stated, “I recently read over my latest bill and noticed that the Regulatory Charge increased to .40, effective on January 1st. According to Sprint’s Terms of Service, I have 30 days to cancel my service of the Effective Date of this material change.”
Alvin complied fully with my request without argument. He even explained to me how to port my number if I would be obtaining a new service provider and would like to keep my current phone number. He notated my account and told me that I would not receive any termination fee. He also said that I would be receiving a credit once I had my number ported. He also mentioned that my new service provider would most likely ask me to call Sprint to confirm that the porting went through okay and that I was not billed. As Alvin explained it, however, as soon as the number is working with another service provider, all should be good to go.
I must say, this was the best customer service experience I’ve had with a large company. Sprint might be pumping up their customer service in anticipation of the fallout from competitors like AT&T, Verizon, etc. It’s a shame that their phones are not up to par.
I just called sprint and you have until March 16, 2010 to cancel your contract without an early termination fee! Just tell them you’re not happy about the regulatory charge increase and they will let you waive the ETF. Cancelling my service tomorrow after I port my number out!
I just called *2 and chose cancellation and simply told the rep that I wanted to cancel ETF free due to the increased fees to my account. She promptly and without hassle took care of it for me on all 3 lines.
i ported my number on jan 10 and just now called sprint. i just told them i seen they raised the fees and would like to cancel. no hassles. took me only 5 minutues.
I don’t plan on porting my number out, I just wanted out of my contract and to go month to month. Sure enough I called last night and the rep cleared it for me. Verified online… “Sprint Subscriber Agreement: Expired on 1/24/10″
Somehow ALL OF SPRINT is just closed this weekend because of the weather. Are they still going to honor this monday? Thanks
Well, change of heart for us….I was out of my contract free and clear, all I had to do was port out numbers…So we went to At&t the next day and after looking at their plans and out of this world pricing plans…we decided to stay with sprint but ONLY if they would give us a great deal on our plan….The main reason I wanted out was for the Iphone anyway…and from the buzz on the net eventually that Iphone will be on Verizon, Sprint, Tmobile …etc…so Ill wait. But here is what I got from Sprint…for $105.00 per mo plus tax 1400 min, shared by 4 lines, unlimited text and data and mobile to mobile and nights and weekends starting at 7pm….you cant BEAT that anywhere! Esp considering Sprints “mobile to mobile” is for ANY CARRIER not just for fellow Sprint carriers….Im happy…I also got a free upgrade to a BB Tour which I LOVE….Thank you SPrint…now hurry up and get the Iphone lol
Just cancelled three lines at sprint due to “I disagree with the new regulatory charges” speach! Just saved $600 bucks and we now get away from the Evil Sprint!!! This really does work. Keep your cool and dont defer from :I disagree with the new regulatory charge”!
We cancelled with Sprint and have gone with Verizon because my new brother-in-law works for them and got us a deal. Thanks Sprint for the way out! This is your way out!!
OK I DID ACCOMPLISH GETTING RID OF SPRINT TO ADD MORE FUEL TO THE FIRE SPRINT IS CHARGING YOU FOR USING THE SPENDING LIMIT FEATURE WHICH WAS FREE BEFORE JANUARY 10 JUST LET THEM KNOW STRAIGHT UP WHAT YOU WANT TO DO AND THEYLL LET YOU OFF I CANCELLED SPRINT IN LESS THE 10 MINUTES NO ETF OR ANYTHING BECAUSE SPRINT IS IN THE WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
