T-Mobile has officially launched its long delayed 3G network today in New York City with future launches planned later in the year for Austin, New Jersey and Long Island, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Miami, Dallas, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Denver, Detroit, Orlando, Kansas City, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New England, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle, Washington DC, San Francisco, Birmingham, Memphis, Tampa, and Phoenix.
While T-Mobile had previously stated to employees that the rollout would be voice only with no UMTS data access, users of HowardForums are reporting the availability of UMTS data in select portions of the New York City area without any change in data access indicators on T-Mobile’s 3G handset lineup.
Some are also reporting upload and download speeds faster than the 384Kbps limits for upload and download speeds when tethered to laptops or running mobile speed tests.

At least PhoneNews has the decency to post valid news on this subject. Both Engadget and BGR with their own agendas posted misinformation and have yet to update their new stories with anything credible.
UMTS delivers both voice and data simultaneously.
This is why we are the best at what we do. Engadget and BGR didn’t bother to check actual user reports and just went with what was originally leaked without any outside verification..
