Verizon Completes First VoLTE Call Over Its LTE Network

Following up on the previous report confirming Verizon’s selection of VoLTE as its voice standard on its LTE network, Verizon has confirmed that it has completed its first of many phone/data calls over the protocol on its current LTE network with the forthcoming LG Revolution Android smartphone.

The phone calls varied in length from 33 seconds to 1 minute in length and were completed at its corporate headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.  Simultaneous voice and data support was also confirmed, as the calls also involved browsing the Android Market and downloading an application at the same time as the voice calls.

The carrier also confirmed that the standard will be tested during the year over its LTE network with the commercial launch planned for 2012. The aforementioned LG Revolution will be the first Verizon LTE device to support VoLTE when it launches later this Spring, but the capability for calls over VoLTE will not be enabled until next year at the same time that VoLTE is rolled out.
