After seemingly slowing down on the XLTE AWS LTE overlay expansion, Verizon has announced that more cities have been to the overall coverage area, with Marshalltown, Iowa; Madisonville/Owensboro, Kentucky.; Traverse City, Michigan.; Meridian, Mississippi. and Martinsville, Virginia being the latest markets to receive the additional coverage provided by the overlay.
As first reported at its launch last year, the overlay uses spectrum purchased from cable companies in 2012 to shore up the capacity issues with the primary 700 MHz C Block network, primarily focused in urban areas, with a further expansion to smaller cities in recent months. Over 40 current Verizon Wireless smartphones released since 2012 now support XLTE.
